An alliance of four engineering schools
Backed by world-class research labs, Lyon Saint-Étienne Engineering Alliance prepares 40% of engineering graduates in Auvergne–Rhône–Alpes Region.
Dynamics in motion
“As the humanity consistently breaches planetary boundaries, we – Centrale Lyon, ENTPE, INSA Lyon, and Mines Saint-Étienne –are acutely aware of the central role engineering schools ought to play in supporting sustainable transitions. Working with academic, economic, and public players is essential to addressing major global challenges faced by organisations and society.
This is why we have decided to develop the synergy between our research and educational excellence to create Lyon Saint-Étienne Engineering Alliance“.
Lyon Saint-Étienne Engineering Alliance: Towards a shared vision
In 2022, Centrale Lyon, ENTPE, INSA Lyon, and Mines Saint-Étienne united their expertise to address three critical transition challenges:
- A low-carbon industry and society
- The circular economy
- Responsible digital society
Our ambition
We aspire to create a unique ecosystem where education, research, and innovation come together to train engineers and scientists capable of fundamental discoveries and pragmatic solutions.
Our mission
We strive to contribute to the development of a more sustainable and just society, for today and tomorrow.

Centrale Lyon

Founded in 1857, Centrale Lyon ranks among the top 10 engineering schools in France. Annually, the school trains over 3,000 students from 50 different nationalities across its two campuses: Centrale Lyon in Écully and ENISE in Saint-Étienne. The diplomas delivered by the school include assistant engineer, generalist engineer, specialist engineer, MA and PhD.
As part of the Groupe des Écoles Centrales, Centrale Lyon has operations in three international locations: China, Morocco, and India.
The training programmes offered by Centrale Lyon stem from excellent research carried out in 6 joint labs with CNRS, 2 international labs, 6 international research networks, and 10 joint laboratories with private companies.
The school’s research excellence and outstanding teaching are recognised internationally. This recognitions paves way to establishing joint degrees with prestigious universities and international partnerships with organisations across the world.
Focusing on the themes of sustainability, energy, environment, and decarbonsation, Centrale Lyon is a leading force in addressing the challenges faced by society and industries.
ENTPE, School of civil, environmental, and urban engineering

Founded in 1954 and located in Vaulx-en-Velin near Lyon, ENTPE is an engineering school under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecological Transition. It hosts 900 students (42% of whom are women), and 250 members of staff.
The school trains technicians, engineers, executives, and doctoral researchers who are poised to become leaders in designing, building, and developing the cities of tomorrow.
ENTPE focuses on engineering domains at the heart of contemporary socio-economic challenges: housing, urban planning, living spaces, natural resources, risks and impacts, and transport and mobility.
ENTPE’s ambition is to contribute to sustainable and fair urban development that respects the public interest and residents’ needs. Drawing on the knowledge and innovations generated in its five research labs, it develops technical and organisational solutions for better living together.
INSA Lyon

Founded in 1957, the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA Lyon) trains humanist engineers who will be ready to address socio-ecological and digital challenges of a rapidly changing world.
Each year, INSA Lyon welcomes over 6,000 students and 600 doctoral candidates. And each year, it delivers 1,000 engineering degrees and 150 PhD titles.
With its network of over 200 academic partners across 5 continents and home to nearly 100 different nationalities present on campus, INSA Lyon confirms its openness to the world.
Committed to social diversity and inclusion, INSA Lyon pursues a series of equality policies through its Gaston Berger Institute.
The school’s position as a scientific powerhouse relies on the research carried out in 22 labs. It is also a member of Groupe INSA, the pioneering network of French public engineering schools, which currently comprises 13 members.
Mines Saint-Étienne

École des Mines de Saint-Étienne is an international engineering school driving innovation with societal impact. It is a member of Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), a leading group of engineering and management schools in France.
The school counts 2,500 students (including 27% international students) and 480 staff across three campuses: Saint-Étienne, Lyon, and Provence. Its reputation is consistently confirmed by two international rankings: Times Higher Education and QS World University Ranking by subject. Moreover, it holds the DDRS label since 2017.
The infrastructure of Mines Saint-Étienne comprises 5 research and training centres, a public outreach centre, 6 research and teaching chairs, 7 technology platforms, €8M in partnerships funding, and a budget of €42M.
Mines Saint-Étienne takes a proactive position in supporting companies and organisations through their ecological, digital, and industrial transitions. Mines Saint-Étienne’s ambition: Inspiring innovation!
