Joint doctorates
A scientific alliance for decarbonisation, responsible digital technology, and the circular economy
An unprecedented joint doctorate initiative
Joint doctorates initiative (bouquets de thèses) is a pioneering scientific undertaking launched by five institutions: Centrale Lyon, ENTPE, INSA Lyon, Mines Saint-Étienne, and Jean Monnet University. The aim of this initiative is to create a unique collaborative dynamic among doctoral candidates who will co-create innovative and impactful solutions together.
The core ambition is to unite multidisciplinary research efforts around major societal challenges. It is deployed over three years:
- 2024: Doctorates dedicated to decarbonisation
- 2025: Focus on responsible digital technology
- 2026: Research centred on the circular economy
An interdisciplinary scientific community
The initiative brings together 14 doctorate supervisors from 8 research labs across Lyon and Saint-Étienne. The domains covered include mechanics, electronics, materials science, economics, and environmental studies.
Affiliated with four doctoral schools, PhD candidates benefit from an environment that actively promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration. This collaboration is expressed in short-term research stays and regular scientific seminars.
A human-centred and impact-driven approach
The collaborative spirit and scientific ambition of the initiative lauded by young researchers.
Djerareou Herman (INSA Lyon) describes the program as “an invaluable opportunity for advanced training in industrial Research & Development”. Khoa-QLDA Nguyen Ngoc (Centrale Lyon) emphasizes his appreciation for “the environmental dimension of the project”. Agathe Cavanna (Jean Monnet University) celebrates “the multidisciplinarity and the holistic vision of the decarbonisation challenge”.
